I Bought a £5,000 Car to Rent Out — Can It Pay for Itself?
I investigate whether buying a cheap used car and renting it out through platforms such as Turo can generate a worthwhile return in the UK. Rather than focusing on headline rental revenue, I calculate the full economics of the business: purchase price, insurance, maintenance, servicing, tyres, platform fees, depreciation, cleaning and the owner's time. I then model different levels of utilisation to see how long it would take for the car to pay for itself.
