What Really Happens to Your Online Return?

Category

Documentary

Hook

You order something online. It arrives. You don’t like it. So you send it back. For you, that’s the end of the story. But for the product, it might only be the beginning. I want to follow what actually happens after an online return leaves your front door — where it goes, who handles it, whether it gets resold, and how much waste is hidden behind the “free returns” button.

High Level Video Summary

A short documentary investigating the hidden journey of online returns. The video follows the process from the customer sending an item back, through warehouses, inspection, repackaging, liquidation and resale. It also looks at the people working inside the returns industry and why some perfectly usable products are still difficult to sell again. The story focuses on one simple question: when we click “return”, where does the product actually go?

Detailed Video Script

Start with a normal online order being returned.

Follow the parcel through each stage: collection, warehouse, inspection and resale.

Speak to warehouse workers, resellers or liquidation businesses about what happens to returned products.

Show examples of items that can easily be resold and others that lose most of their value simply because the packaging has been opened.

Then visit a liquidation or returns reseller to see where some of these products eventually end up.

Finish by following one returned item as far as possible and revealing what happened to it.

Target Audience

Viewers interested in business, consumer culture, sustainability, logistics and behind-the-scenes stories about how everyday systems actually work.

Could you film an actual inspection decision for an opened but usable item? Hearing a worker explain what makes resale viable or not would turn the warehouse stage into a scene, not just a stop on the parcel's route. If access isn't possible, I'd say that on screen so the final example doesn't stand in for all returns.

For this video, you can reach out to fulfilment centres and freight forwarders. These jobs are all interconnected, and they could likely help you get access. They tend to be in ports or by airports so might be worth making a list of potential options and going around over the course of a day to get permission. I'd recommend going in person - easy to hang up the phone, hard to hang up a person.

I was shocked when I found out how many returns get burned/ wasted. This could be a really good way to show how wasteful returns can be and to highlight the importance of thoughtful buying.

UK vs China: Same Problem, Completely Different Solution

A comedy comparison of everyday life in the UK and China. Each section starts with exactly the same situation, then shows how differently it plays out in each country. The humour comes from exaggerating the small frustrations, habits and cultural differences that people who have lived in both countries immediately recognise. Possible comparisons include food delivery, paying, customer service, supermarkets, public transport and ordering drinks.

I Redesigned 5 Terrible Brands to See If Design Really Matters

I select five real or fictional businesses with weak branding and redesign them from scratch. For each one, I explain what feels wrong with the original design, create a new visual direction, and show the full before-and-after transformation. At the end, I run a simple blind preference test to see whether better design actually changes which product people choose.

I Booked the Cheapest International Flight I Could Find

I want to test what happens if I stop choosing where I travel and let the price of the flight decide instead. I'll search for the cheapest international flight leaving London, book the cheapest valid option without researching the destination first, and travel there. Once I arrive I'll have 24 hours to explore, eat local food and find something genuinely interesting to do. At the end I'll reveal exactly how much the whole trip cost and decide whether I would actually recommend doing.
