UK vs China: Same Problem, Completely Different Solution

Category

Comedy

Hook

What happens when the exact same problem happens in Britain and China? You’re hungry at 11pm. You need something delivered immediately. You want to complain in a restaurant. Or you’re trying to pay someone. Same problem. Completely different experience. So today I’m testing UK vs China — one everyday situation at a time.

High Level Video Summary

A comedy comparison of everyday life in the UK and China. Each section starts with exactly the same situation, then shows how differently it plays out in each country. The humour comes from exaggerating the small frustrations, habits and cultural differences that people who have lived in both countries immediately recognise. Possible comparisons include food delivery, paying, customer service, supermarkets, public transport and ordering drinks.

Detailed Video Script

Each scene starts with the same problem.

11pm and hungry

UK:
“Delivery in 55–75 minutes. £3.99 delivery fee. £2.49 service fee.”

China:
Food arrives before I’ve finished deciding what to watch.

Paying for something

UK:
Card machine says: “Insert card.”

China:
Someone has already scanned the QR code.

Restaurant complaint

UK:
“How was everything?”

“Lovely, thank you.”

Walks outside:

“That was terrible.”

China:

Waiter gets called over immediately and the whole table starts discussing the problem.

Continue with 5–8 everyday comparisons, keeping each scene short.

Finish by choosing which country wins each category — but also showing that both systems have their own ridiculous moments.

Target Audience

Viewers interested in British and Chinese culture, expats, international students, travellers and anyone who enjoys observational comedy about everyday life.

I'd match the camera angle and the moment the problem starts in each pair of scenes. For the payment example, let both customers reach the till in exactly the same way before the card-machine/QR split. The visual match makes the contrast the punchline without needing a line explaining which country is “better.”

I agree, either have them side by side for comparison or do a funny DVR backwards motion and show it from the other perspective.

Maybe explain both situations too. For someone not in either cultural context, these reactions could seem rude, so it could be helpful to explain that the UK mindset is being polite and the Chinese mindset is directly addressing the problem. Highlight how neither is trying to offend. I'd love to hear how you think the other would respond in the other context too. EG, could QR payments work in the UK?

What Really Happens to Your Online Return?

A short documentary investigating the hidden journey of online returns. The video follows the process from the customer sending an item back, through warehouses, inspection, repackaging, liquidation and resale. It also looks at the people working inside the returns industry and why some perfectly usable products are still difficult to sell again. The story focuses on one simple question: when we click “return”, where does the product actually go?

I Redesigned 5 Terrible Brands to See If Design Really Matters

I select five real or fictional businesses with weak branding and redesign them from scratch. For each one, I explain what feels wrong with the original design, create a new visual direction, and show the full before-and-after transformation. At the end, I run a simple blind preference test to see whether better design actually changes which product people choose.

I Booked the Cheapest International Flight I Could Find

I want to test what happens if I stop choosing where I travel and let the price of the flight decide instead. I'll search for the cheapest international flight leaving London, book the cheapest valid option without researching the destination first, and travel there. Once I arrive I'll have 24 hours to explore, eat local food and find something genuinely interesting to do. At the end I'll reveal exactly how much the whole trip cost and decide whether I would actually recommend doing.
