Video Title

I quit teaching English in Japan.

Category

Vlogs

Hook

Have a dramatic thumbnail that just says "I quit," looking absolutely shocked, with Japan things in the background. Talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. Start showing background footage of all the great things in Japan and go, "Nah this ain't reality. This is the reality of a poor English teacher in Japan."

High Level Video Summary

Talk about: - the allure of becoming an English teacher in Japan, moving to Japan, and why it's the easiest way to get into Japan, especially with programmes such as the Jet Programme or private kindergartens - why, long term, the wage is unsustainable and how you can't make a career out of it - the attitude of the Japanese towards foreigners and also the politicians towards foreigners - the ever-changing environment - why it's a good step into Japan

Detailed Video Script

Hoping to include some of my friends who are English teachers here in Japan and get their take on:
- the career
- what attracted them to this role
- why they stay in this role
- what their long-term aspirations and goals are
- why, ultimately, it's a good step into Japan but to forge a long-term career in Japan you've got to upskill yourself and learn Japanese
- if you can get a spouse, even better: get on a spouse visa, work in IT or work remotely, and try to forge a real healthy and good work-life balance in Japan without falling into the trap of becoming an unemployable English teacher long term

Target Audience

Everybody who's wanting to move to Japan without knowing the real steps it takes and why the allure of being an English teacher is good and should be experienced but shouldn't be the long-term aspiration

Why will this video succeed?

So many people are still fascinated with Japan but they don't know the dark side of being an English teacher in Japan. Maybe I should call this video "The Dark Side of Teaching English in Japan."

Strategic value to your channel

This will be the opening video of my new channel, Life in Japan, and I believe it has a very attractive and appealing hook. Depending on the success of the video, it will dictate the next following videos as well, whether it's around the dark side of Japan, or whether it's around English teaching, or whether it's around the realities of Japan.

Great idea, you hear about people moving to Japan all the time, so it's good to get a non-romanticised version. However, I'd tweak the frame to show how teaching English in Japan can be a great way to start a life there, but it's easy to get stuck if you don't have a plan for what comes next. This tweak gives justification to your points and ties it all together. It might be good to highlight that everyone's experience differs too.

It would be good to get some quotes from other JET teachers or private teachers about how their experience has been. Otherwise, this becomes a biased piece. Maybe gets some quotes off the JET website or talk about how these programmes exist for cultural exchange and shouldn't be seen as a full career, but a stepping stone.

They already say they will interview friends; however, building on that, if they're your friends, they likely have a similar experience as they are probably in the same city as you. It might be worth reaching out to people around Japan to get a more balanced response.

I'd move the “spouse visa” point later, as it jumps pretty quickly from “Upskill and learn Japanese” to “get a spouse...” That could feel like you're presenting marriage as a career strategy. IF you want to keep it where it is, maybe make a light hearted joke about it and move on.
