Nanjing isn’t exactly known as an international food city. So today I’m going to see how many different countries I can eat my way through without leaving Nanjing.

High Level Video Summary

I’ll spend the day looking for non-Chinese food around Nanjing and try to eat something from as many different countries as possible. The interesting part is seeing what’s actually available here and how close it is to the food you’d get in the original country.

Detailed Video Script 

I’ll start with an easy one like Korean or Japanese food, then try to find progressively less obvious cuisines.

For each stop I’ll try one popular dish, see how much it costs and whether it feels authentic or has been adapted for Chinese tastes.

The goal is to get through as many countries as possible before the end of the day.

Ideally I’d like to finish with something unexpected that I didn’t think I’d be able to find in Nanjing.

Target Audience

People interested in China, food, travel and seeing everyday life in Chinese cities beyond Beijing and Shanghai.

I like the concept, especially because Nanjing makes it less predictable than doing this in Shanghai. One thing I'd add is a rule for what counts as a country — otherwise Korean/Japanese/Italian could make the first half feel a bit too easy. It might be more fun if each country gets progressively harder to find, with a target like 8 or 10 countries before the day ends. That gives the video a clearer challenge and makes me want to see whether you actually manage it.

I’d lean into the “how Chinese is the foreign food” angle a bit more. Finding pizza or Korean BBQ in Nanjing isn’t that surprising, but seeing how those dishes have been adapted for local tastes could be really interesting. Maybe score each stop on authenticity vs localisation. I’d be curious which cuisine ends up tasting the least like what you’d get in its home country.

Could be fun to have someone from one or two of the countries judge the food with you if you can. Your reaction tells us whether it tastes good, but theirs would tell us whether it actually resembles what they grew up eating. Even just doing that for the final 2–3 cuisines could give the ending a stronger payoff.

Give every stop the same two interview questions: 1. What was changed for local tastes? 2. What would someone from the dish's home country notice first? The repeated answers will give the episode a stronger thread than your own authenticity score and should reveal something different at each restaurant.
