I’ve got $10 to eat for an entire day in Shanghai. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and hopefully a few snacks — everything has to come out of the same budget. Let’s see how far $10 actually gets me.

Detailed Video Script 

Start the day with $10 and explain the rules — all food and drinks count, but transport doesn’t.

For breakfast I’ll find something cheap and local, then work my way through lunch, an afternoon snack and dinner.

After every stop I’ll show how much I spent and how much money I have left.

I want to try proper Shanghai food rather than just buying the absolute cheapest thing possible.

If there’s any money left at the end, I’ll use it for one final dessert or drink.

The budget counter should work really well, but I wonder if $10 is actually difficult enough in Shanghai. Around 70 RMB can still buy three pretty decent local meals if you know where to go, so the outcome might feel a bit predictable. Maybe add another rule like every meal has to be a different Shanghai speciality, or you need to fit breakfast, lunch, dinner AND two snacks into the $10. That would give the budget a bit more tension without making it artificially impossible.

I think the strongest version of this is if you avoid planning the exact meals in advance. If you already know where the cheap places are, the challenge loses a bit of tension. Maybe give yourself a rule like you can only choose the next meal once the previous one is finished. That way overspending at lunch actually creates a problem for dinner, which should make the budget counter feel more meaningful.

I’d probably keep the $10 title because it’s instantly understandable, but show the RMB amount on screen from the start so the challenge feels grounded in Shanghai rather than just converted for an international audience. It could also be worth rating each meal on value and how filling it was. Otherwise you might technically “win” by eating tiny cheap portions all day, which isn’t quite the same as proving $10 can actually feed you for 24 hours.
