Har gow is one of my favourite dim sum, but how different is it in London compared to Guangzhou? I’m going to try some of the best-rated har gow in both cities and see which one actually wins.

I’ll try har gow from a few different places in London and then do the same in Guangzhou. I’ll compare the wrapper, prawns, texture, price and overall taste to see how close London can get to Guangzhou.

Detailed Video Script 

I’ll start in London and try har gow from a few different dim sum restaurants, from a normal Chinatown spot to a more premium restaurant.

For each one I’ll compare the skin, amount and quality of prawn, texture and price.

Then I’ll do the same thing in Guangzhou.

At the end I’ll choose my favourite from each city and compare the two winners to decide whether London can actually compete with Guangzhou.

I like the comparison, but I think "best-rated" could make the result feel a bit predictable if Guangzhou is obviously going to win on authenticity and price. Maybe make it more of a fair fight — for example, compare a £10 London har gow against a similar-priced one in Guangzhou, or pick one cheap and one premium place in each city. That could make the final result less obvious and give you more to talk about than just "Guangzhou tastes better."

One thing that could make this stronger is bringing in someone else for the final blind comparison. If you already know which har gow came from London and Guangzhou, there’s a bit of bias built in. Even better if the person doing the blind test knows dim sum well. I’d be genuinely curious whether they can actually identify which city each one came from just from the wrapper and prawn.

I wonder if the title could be a bit more provocative, something like “Can London Beat Guangzhou at Har Gow?” The current title explains the comparison, but it doesn’t quite create as much tension. I’d also make sure you compare places at similar levels — cheap vs cheap and premium vs premium — otherwise restaurant type might matter more than the city itself.

Har gow changes quickly after it leaves the steamer, especially the wrapper texture. I would standardise how soon each basket is tasted and show that timing on screen. Otherwise a busy filming setup could make one restaurant look worse simply because its dumplings sat longer. That small rule will make the wrapper comparison more credible without pretending two cities can be tested under identical conditions.
